Hello,
I hit the "ESP off" button on my 2008 Passaton Wagon. When I do this, an icon appears in the display of a car sliding in rain. Once I did this, the car drove great through today's snow. Was this icon telling me that ESP was on? I was told by VW salesperson that the ESP is always on by default. If so, why didn't my car handle like that before I pushed the button. It did not go on by itself, which is what I was led to believe.

Can you clear this up for me?
Thanks,
yunquemar.ja

Al,

I would like to be respectful towards you, so I'll call you Al today since you obviously chose to mask yourself for fear perhaps that your ideas may be associated with your real identity. It's also shorter than algoreisactuallyasmartguy and georgebushisactuallyadumbguy which you are using as a disguise and says enough about you that I should not have to continue.

But I will gently advise you about a couple of things. Beside being insulting as you do not know what I have read or not, telling someone to "read more" is not an argument against a claim. In fact it's no argument at all. Let me illustrate. If someone comes into the dealership and tells me that spot welding is better than laser welding, it would be incredibly rude of me to say to that person, you Sir need to "read more." No, instead (of losing the sale) I should rather elaborate on the rigidity and safety advantages of laser welding over past conventional methods and make my case to earn the sale. But You coming on here and saying I need to "read more," makes you look simply foolish and you loose complete credibility to your audience. So all eyes are on you now since you claim I should read more, what should I be reading? Are you really suggesting AlGore by the fake name you use?

Let us start reading starting with Error #1 here:
Monckton's Response to Gore's Errors. Then perhaps we could read the attached 12 scientific papers that refute Al Gore's global warming claims to see if there is any validity to them, or is that too much work?

Al, take a deep breath (exhale especially) and enjoy the planet in your TDI!

Clayton, thanks for your comment. Even if I grant you that the stomach lining defense system keeps up with its acidity conditions, it's unclear just how the acid is contained in the first place, or how a counter sodium bicarbonate production system or a pancreas just happen to be evolving at the same time. It's a bit like pouring water out of a pitcher and expecting a glass or perfect container to self-construct before the water hits the ground. Considering the myriad of other operations seamlessly working together, namely the systems that bring food down to the stomach regardless of body orientation, the presence of intestine one-way valves, the addition of hormones and enzymes to break down proteins and other food components, ingredient absorption, the triggering of other digestive organs at the right time, I think the odds are stacked against an evolutionary bottom-up process. The water cycle is simply an example of a system that has many separate parts harmoniously working together to sustain human life. If the water cycle were non-existent, how could life, much less digestive systems, evolve?

The pH of the human stomach varies greatly (between individuals and in the same individual temporally). Within the animal kingdom this variation is even more extreme. The argument proposed above assumes that the pH of all stomachs must be very low. It is perfectly reasonable, however, to instead assume that over time as conditions within the stomach became more acidic (through forces of evolution), the defenses against acid production would strengthen as well. I won't even begin to critique the water cycle argument as it is deeply flawed and I don't know where to begin.
